TRANTER JOINS FORCES WITH FOOD AND TREES FOR AFRICA AT THE FJ KLOPPERS PRIMARY SCHOOL
With the whole world shifting its focus towards offsetting carbon emissions, Food and Trees for Africa encourages disadvantaged families, children and communities to grow natural gardens that will continue towards alleviation of poverty in our communities. To this end, Tranter Rock Drills has partnered with Food and Trees for Africa to provide a sustainable opportunity for school children and others to empower themselves to provide food for their immediate communities. The FJ Kloppers school is a small school situated in off a main road that suddenly becomes a rural world between the commercial farmlands of Krugersdorp, about two hours out of Johannesburg. The inital visit to the FJ Kloppers Primary took place on the 19th of October 2010, where various aspects of permaculture theory, practical explanations, water conservation theories and training on garden care was taught to community project leaders and learners. The garden development was also initiated. Tranter Rock Drills also sees an opportunity in the empowerment and entrepreneurial skills developed in that the school could sell surplus fruits and vegetables to the local comminity for an income. Follow up visits on 23 November 2010 and 24 January 2011, saw progress in development of the garden. An increased level of community involvement has also been noted by the project leaders. We are proud to be part of this ground-breaking opportunity and will conduct follow-up visits to the school as a display of our committment to the project's success. |
